Marvel Studios' production process for its future Phases will be slowed down in the coming years thanks to Disney CEO Bob Iger.
In the company's Q2 fiscal earnings call for this year, Iger announced that the studio will be limiting its yearly output for films and shows.
“We're slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two or at the maximum three,” Iger stated in the call (via The Hollywood Reporter.)
In the past few years, Marvel Studios continually released several films and series back-to-back, especially in 2021 with Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Mixed in between these films included the likes of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki.
However, in recent memory, such films, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, underperformed at the box office.
Iger indirectly pointed at this output, stating, “I've always felt that quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality, and I think that's exactly what happened.”
Several upcoming MCU projects, including Blade and The Fantastic Four, have already seen delays and pushbacks, leaving Deadpool & Wolverine the only film from Marvel Studios releasing this year.
However, while this year may be somewhat empty of films and shows, 2025 and 2026 seem to be filled with Marvel's upcoming films, which include the two aforementioned as well as Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*.
In addition, there are also some Marvel shows, which include Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, and Wonder Man, that had finished development or were close to, before Iger's announcement.
As such, it's very likely that these shows and films will stick to their release dates unless Feige and the company make changes ahead of time to stick with what Iger has planned for the studio.
Nonetheless, given how Iger wants to shift to a more qualitative plan ahead, Marvel Studios will likely limit what projects will be released in the next few years, giving fans some breathing room and increasing anticipation for what's to come.
