Andy Muschietti, director of Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2023 DC movie The Flash, has officially confirmed that Nicolas Cage will be making an appearance in The Flash as Superman, aka Clark Kent, alongside Ezra Miller who stars as the titular character.
While talking to Esquire Middle East about Cage’s upcoming debut as a live-action Superman in The Flash movie, Muschietti said that Nicolas Cage “was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it”, confirming that the role will be a cameo in the new DC flick.
What makes Cage’s addition to the DC Universe even more iconic is the fact that he almost played the character before in the cancelled 1998 Superman movie Superman Lives!, directed by Tim Burton and produced by Jon Peters, making this a cameo 25 years in the making.
Originally, Cage was set to star as Superman and face off against famous DC villains Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and Doomsday, alongside Chris Rock as Jimmy Olsen, Sandra Bullock as Lois Lane, with Christopher Walken originally set to star as Brainiac.
Images of Cage testing for the movie in full Superman costume did manage to break into the public during the late 2000s and mid-2010s, which could possibly be the suit Cage will be wearing in the actual movie itself, however, footage has yet to be released of Cage’s cameo in The Flash.
According to Muschietti, Cage was more than happy to join the cast of The Flash to star in a brief cameo as the iconic cape-wearing superhero, as he told Esquire Middle East that “He [Nicolas Cage] is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic”.
The Flash comes to theatres on June 16, 2023.
