Jim Carrey starred as the villain Robotnik, also known as Doctor Eggman, in both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the two live-action adaptations of the popular Sonic game series, however, Carrey has not been yet announced to be starring in the third outing.
Ben Schwartz, who voices the iconic character of Sonic, the main antagonist of the franchise who has now gone toe-to-toe with Carrey’s Robotnik twice, is hoping that fans will get to see Robotnik once more, but claims to know “nothing” when asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he knows anything about the next instalment.
Ben Schwartz Talks Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Hopes
THR asked Schwartz last night at the premiere of Renfield, in which Schwartz is playing a character called Teddy Lobo alongside Nicolas Cage’s Dracula, “something that you are playing, that a lot of people are excited for, is Sonic 3, what can you tell us about it, is there any information that you can spill?”, to which Schwartz responded with:
“I know nothing, yet, and I hope that (…) I know that Jim Carrey did some interviews and they’re not sure if he’s coming back, my hope is that we ALL get to come back, and we all get to do another one, that is my hope of all hopes, because I love that franchise so much and I love the fans and I love all the stuff we’ve made, so, my hope is that we all get to do this third one [Sonic the Hedgehog 3] – it will be the best time.”
Can Jim Carrey Return For Sonic 3?
As of writing this article, the only cast members currently expected to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, James Marsden as Sonic’s best friend and carer Tom Wachowski, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey who voices Tails – as listed on the official IMDB page.
When Schwartz talked about hearing Jim Carrey doing some interviews, in regards to if fans will get to see Robotnik for a third time, is due to Carrey somewhat announcing his retirement from acting, however, Carrey has also spoken in the past about where he would like to take the character of Eggman for the Sonic threequel, potentially meaning that the beloved actor may not quite be done with the Sonic franchise just yet.
It has yet to be announced but hopefully, fans will get to see Carrey take on the role again, and that his retirement may just affect taking on new roles, and not his current roles in franchises such as the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
Sonic 2 Spoilers: The iconic Sonic character known as Shadow was teased during the final moments of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, hinting that Shadow will be one of the main antagonists for the third instalment, similar to Idris Elba’s Knuckles in Sonic 2, with Shadow most likely to end up helping the good guys to take down Robotnik, assuming that Carrey will return to the villain’s set.
It has been said in the past that the team behind the Sonic movies have no plans on recasting Carrey’s Robotnik, which raised speculation from fans that Sonic 3 may never see the light of day, despite the release date already being set.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently slated for December 20, 2024, release.
