Director Angel Manuel Soto has confirmed James Gunn‘s recent comments that Blue Beetle is very much a part of the newly planned DC Universe.
“The first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle,” is what Gunn had to say about the matter when talking to Michael Rosen Baum on Inside of You, before saying “that the first DCU movie is Superman [Legacy].”
Gunn’s comments on the Xolo Maridueña-led DCU movie initially raised some confusion within its fan base.
The main question is where Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes aka Blue Beetle exists within the wider DC Universe over at Warner Bros.

However, while talking to Total Film, director Soto thoroughly explained its DCU status along with revealing plans for a Blue Beetle trilogy.
Soto explained that Blue Beetle is a part of the “[DC] universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future instalments of the DCU”.
While explaining its position in the franchise’s universe, or multiverse if you will, Soto confirmed that Blue Beetle does not tie directly to all DC titles.
As he told Total Film that the movie is “not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist.”
Soto continued to say “that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”

Long story short, it sounds like Blue Beetle is going to be diving into the canonical space of the recently announced DC Universe revamp.
So as long as the title goes down well, it may be safe to assume some future Maridueña appearances and possibly even some team ups with his fellow DC heros sometime in the near future.
Blue Beetle Might Become First DCU Trilogy
During the same conversation with Total Film, Soto also revealed plans for a hopeful Blue Beetle trilogy to come to fruition.
Revealing that the movie was always planned and made “with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least”.
Stating that the plan is to take Blue Beetle into a “traditional three-act structure of a story” while confirming that himself and presumably the Blue Beetle team the “first [Blue Beetle] movie (…) to be the first act of a saga.”

So expect some sort of cliffhanger-type ending for the first Blue Beetle as it sounds like it will be reaching for an unannouunced part two.
If Blue Beetle does in fact become an official trilogy in the wider DC Universe. It’s potential that it may be the first movie series to become a trilogy in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.
It has yet to be announced as to whether or not there will be a Blue Beetle 2, however, Gunn and Soto’s comments on the matter seem rather positive.
Leaving it safe to assume at least one Blue Beetle sequel as long as the title performs well with fans and most likely the box office.
Joining Maridueña in Blue Beetle are Bruna Marquezine who stars as Jenny Kord, George Lopez as Rudy, Raoul Trujillo as Conrad Carapax, Belissa Escobedo as Milagros Reyes, with Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, and Becky G as Khaji-Da aka the voice of the Blue Beetle suit.
