Pop icon Britney Spears has revealed in her memoir The Woman in Me that she had an abortion while dating her ex-partner and famous pop singer Justin Timberlake.
According to an exclusive excerpt shared by People, it’s revealed that Spears details the painful experience that she has kept secret for 20 years now.
Spears’ memoir describes a time in her life when she fell pregnant with Timberlake’s baby.
“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” Spears, now 41, writes of the pregnancy in the book. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
Spears’ memoir delves deeper into the painful memory, with confirmation that she wanted to keep the child “if it had been left up to [her] alone”.
According to the exclusive, Spears writes: “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”
The pop singer continues to write about her abortion experience: “It’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”
Spears and Timberlake split back in 2002, post-split, she moved on and went on to become a mother to two sons (Sean Preston and Jayden James) with her second husband, Kevin Federline.
The Woman in Me memoir that contains Spears’ memoir releases on October 24 through Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
It’s been two years now since Spears was released from her court-ordered conservatorship, something that had been in place for an incredibly long 13 years.
