A Captain America Love Interest From The Comics Might Be Coming To The MCU

Could the Serpent Society truly be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

byAlex Duthie
22 January 2023

Anthony Mackie‘s first film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new Captain America era is due to release in 2024, titled Captain America: New World Order, following the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It may come as no surprise that the plot details of the film are kept tightly under wraps at Marvel Studios, besides casting information and the odd report here and there. We are now seeing online that a new report is rumouring that the Serpent Society member Rachel Leighton, also known as Diamondback, might just be making her MCU debut for the fourth instalment.

This latest report comes from industry scooper Daniel Richtman, alongside the official announcement from Deadline that Xosha Roquemore (Precious) has joined the cast of Captain America: New World Order. The new report, it states that Diamondback will be a female in her early to mid-30s and will play a villain to Anthony Mackie’s Captain America. However, just like in the comic adaptation of this character, the report also states that she may become a possible love interest too. Although the report has no mention of the actor Xosha Roquemore, fans online were quick to theorise that this could be the character Roquemore has signed on to play.

Is Serpent Society Coming To The MCU?

If Rachel Leighton/ Diamondback is indeed coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is only safe to assume that the Serpent Society will follow alongside her. In the comics, the Serpent Society are a mischievous group of villains who have an impressive count of characters on their team. This wouldn’t be the first time that the Serpent Society has had a connection with the MCU, as it was jokingly announced at SDCC one year to hide the true title of Captain America: Civil War. This could have either been a funny tease that the Serpent Society were indeed in Kevin Feige’s pipeline for the future of the franchise, just a wild coincidence, or maybe even both.

Marvel Studios and Disney have not announced anything about Diamondback or the Serpent Society being connected to the fourth Captain America film and probably won’t reveal anything until later this year. The current focus for the MCU right now will be to promote and hype fans up for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which comes out on the 17th of February. Introducing the Serpent Society to the live-action MCU would, however, open up a vast amount of possibilities in terms of characters and storylines. Such as the introduction of fellow team member Viper, who was one of the main characters in Hugh Jackman’s The Wolverine, or at least loosely based on anyway. Just keep in mind that this report is just another rumour, and we will just have to wait for official confirmation from Marvel Studios or Disney.

As of writing this article, the confirmed cast for the film so far is of course Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Tim Blake Nelson’s reprisal as Samuel Sterns, Carl Lumbly’s return of Isaiah Bradley, Danny Ramirez’s return as Joaquin Torres, Shira Haas as Sabra, newcomer Xosha Roquemroe, and Harrison Ford taking on the title of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross due to the sad passing of William Hurt. Just like any other MCU project, there will surely be plenty more cast members to announce in the foreseeable future plus special reveals when the film releases in 2024.
