Universal Pictures provided an exclusive first look at the 2024 movie adaptation of Wicked during their 2023 CinemaCon panel, starring Ariana Grande as Glinda with Cynthia Erivo as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, with the movie set prior to the events of The Wizard of Oz, just as it is told in the original broadway stage play.
Audiences who haven’t had the chance to watch the stage version of Wicked will still have surely heard the classic musical number titled “Defying Gravity”, as it has been sung in various films and tv shows by many talented singers, including Idina Menzel who has also played Elphaba, ironically.
‘Wicked’ 2024 CinemaCon Footage Description
It should be noted that the footage shown at CinemaCon from Wicked (2024) was an extremely early and rough version of the cut, however, the footage revealed Erivo’s Elphaba who in the clip is being taught by her new professor, Madame Morrible, who is played by Michelle Yeoh.
Short glimpses are then shown of Elphaba singing the classic song “Defying Gravity”, giving the audience of the 2023 CinemaCon the honour of hearing the number as very few people have actually got to see that so far, with the footage not expected to be released for quite some time.
Elphaba giving Grande’s Glinda her iconic hat is also shown during the footage, along with a behind-the-scenes reel providing a sneak peek at the production that is currently ongoing as of writing this article, another exclusive for CinemaCon’s audience.
Wicked is set to come to theatres on November 27, 2024.
