Details about Andor‘s second season were revealed at Star Wars Celebration this week. The season is still currently being shot, but clips of the season’s action-packed moments were also shown to attendees. Executive producer Tony Gilroy teased that the season will directly head into the events of Rogue One: “You know where we’re going. You saw that Death Star blow up. We make that happen.”
While Star Wars Celebration proceeds with other announcements like Ahsoka and new live-action movies, production designer Will Htay went on Instagram to share his work during the development of Star Wars: Andor, including concept art for Tac Pods and Luthen Rael’s Fondor Haulcraft.
From a little while back- Here are my Tac Pods designs from Andor. They were meant to be like mall cops being sent into a powder keg then it all goes a little Black Hawk Down on them – expendable, low cost and just about do their jobs (low orbit and atmospheric flight with no hyper drives or frills). Fun one to do. I definitely channeled some Ralph McQuarrie, Colin Cantwell, early Doug Chiang (Ep 1 drop ship) and Ryan Church into this one. You’ll also see my very rough initial sketches, fast pen drawings to get the idea and broad strokes down. Andor is a massive to show, a lot of ground to cover!

Luthen’s Fondor Hauler from Andor. A Q car for the Star Wars universe. Unassuming and virtually a “background extra” of a ship until Luthen needs it to punch through. Played around with this quite a bit, sketches to follow. Really happy how this turned out.

My original concept sketches for Luthen’s Fondor Haulcraft. Pen on paper, ruler, down and dirty old school. Always like to scribble first, sometimes get into details in sketches if it feels right, then bounce into 3D and back (and forth) again. Trying to scribble more digitally and get over the feel of pen/pencil on paper. Don’t think I’ll ever get over it, but happy to keep playing. The sketches help cement the idea of what the ship needed to be and explore some fun ideas quickly.

All episodes of Andor are now streaming on Disney+. Season 2 of Andor is set to premiere in August of 2024.
