Welcome back to another edition of CoveredGeekly’s CoveredComics, where we look at our top five favourite comics of the week. Once again, a bunch of good comics were released with only one or two falling to a score of 3 out of 5.
This time around, we have more Marvel comics appearing in this week’s top five but also still have some appearances from DC comics and Image comics.
5. Wolverine #38
- Writer: Benjamin Percy
- Artist: Juan Jose Ryp
- Colourist: Frank D’Armata
- Letterer: Cory Petit
- Editor: Mark Basso
- Publisher: Marvel
Overall just a fun issue to read through. Just like the last issue where we got a team-up between Wolverine and Hulk, this time we get to see Wolverine teaming up with Captain America. Two characters that are the polar opposite of each other but have a somewhat similar history to the point where they can relate with each other. There was some very interesting use of the panelling of this issue for the action sequences and I love how Juan’s art suits this story.
I’m a massive fan of the team-ups that are happening right now and I can’t wait for the next issue where we get to see Wolverine team up with Black Panther and how their dynamic will work.
4. The Cull #3
- Writer: Kelly Thompson
- Artist: Mattia De Lulis
- Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
- Editor: Charles Beacham
- Publisher: Image
Thanks to Mattia De Lulis’s art on this series, we get to truly see the emotions that these characters are going through and for the fast-paced issue that Kelly Thompson has provided us with all the rampant developments taking place, De Lulis was really able to showcase the emotions of these characters well.
Kelly Thompson manages to leave an interesting detail within this issue if you pay attention to the events taking place and this is something that could be easy to miss that I think will affect the story at great lengths in the next few issues we have left.
3. The Avengers #6
- Writer: Jed MacKay
- Artist: Ivan Fiorelli
- Colourist: Federico Blee
- Letterer: Cory Petit
- Editor: Tom Brevoort
- Publisher: Marvel
This was a great ending to the first arc, we got to see the Avengers face off against mirror versions of themselves. It seems like we also either got a new member of the Avengers too or a new HQ but only the future issues will let us know if that’s the case. This is easily a story arc that could’ve been shortened as I think some of the issues in between were just unnecessary and we got a lot of what we needed to know in these last two issues and the first two issues.
I’m still expecting more of Kang as I’m sure we’ve got more to see of him and more of an explanation for everything that was going on. This issue also had an addition of a backstory featuring Firebird which was short but still interesting and I hope they follow up on it.
2. Captain Marvel: Assault on Eden #1
- Writer: Anthony Oliveira
- Artist: Eleonora Carlini
- Colourist: Ruth Redmond
- Letterer: Ariana Maher
- Editor: Sarah Brunstad
- Publisher: Marvel
I was glad to finally read some good Captain Marvel content after what was that Dark Tempest miniseries. Anthony Oliveira brings the fun back into Captain Marvel with this quick adventure to rescue Hulking and take down the supreme intelligence. Seems reminiscent of what we may see in Marvel Studio’s The Marvels. Ruth Redmond also provides vibrant colours to Carol’s transformations within the issue.
This is more of what I expect from Captain Marvel content, with interesting villains and side characters who hold relevance to the story being told and relevance to Captain Marvel’s lore. Thanks to this, I’m now once again looking forward to Alyssa Wong’s run and hope it does justice to this and the previous run.
1. Batman: City of Madness #1
- Writer: Christian Ward
- Artist: Christian Ward
- Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
- Editor: Matthew Levine
- Publisher: DC
Batman tends to get a lot of these DC Black Label stories and though he’s a favourite of mine, I never usually check them out. City of Madness intrigued me with Ward’s art style and it even kept me hooked with his writing. It seems like this story is taking a lot of influences from H.P. Lovecraft’s monsters and taking a different look into the monster that’s within Batman.
The best part about this issue isn’t the different take on Batman or even the court of owls but we are getting an insight into what Alfred has to deal with when Batman is out and about. A topic that isn’t new in any way but I think it’ll be of some great importance to this story.
That’s CoveredGeekly’s CoveredComics for the week with our top 5 picks. The honourable mention of this week will be Wesley Dodds: The Sandman, wonderful use of panelling in that comic and love the noir feel and how well Rossmo’s art fits with it all. Let us know what your favourite comic of the week was and give us some recommendations of what we should read.
