David Ayer was a guest on Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones podcast (via Deadline) where he talked about how Suicide Squad was his biggest heartbreak in Hollywood.
Ayer, who directed the film, has been open in recent years about his dissatisfaction with the 2016 theatrical version, which he feels differs greatly from his original vision.
Suicide Squad Left David Ayer Heartbroken
“Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get fucked by someone you hate,” Ayer Stated.
“The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”, Ayer expressed his disappointment with Suicide Squad.
“Come right off Fury, right? I had the town in my hand, could’ve done anything, and I did do anything. And [I] go on this journey with [Suicide Squad].. “And the same thing — authentic, truthful, let’s do all the rehearsal, let’s really get in each other’s souls. Ayer continued, “ Let’s create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then Deadpool opened… and they never tested Batman v Superman so they were expecting a different result, and then they got hammered by all the critics.”
Ayer criticized the Hollywood executives for spoiling the dark tone of the original film by incorporating comedic elements.
“Then it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a fucking comedy now.”
Where Is Suicide Squad’s “Ayer’s Cut”?
David Ayer has been vocal about the release of his version of Suicide Squad, referred to as the Ayer Cut. Last month on X (previously known as Twitter), Ayer shared that James Gunn, the new head of DC Studios, assured him that the Ayer Cut would eventually be released.
Ayer did not provide further details.
“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being shown seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects,” Ayer said on X.
Although the film was penned by the critics, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad turned out to be a box office success, earning an impressive $747 million globally.
