Netflix has announced that the Arrested Development star David Cross will be officially joining the cast of The Umbrella Academy, coming in to play an original character for the final season. Cross is known for playing roles in dozens of beloved projects and also for his naturally funny personality, with credits dating back to the early 90s. The final season of The Umbrella Academy is set to drop on Netflix sometime in late 2023 or 2024, however, details on who Cross is playing have been shared, at least a brief description and a name that is.
In Netflix’s latest Tudum article, Cross is revealed to be playing an original character called Sy Grossman, a character not originally from the Gerard Way comic books. Cross’ Sy Grossman character is described as an “upstanding but shy business owner and family man”, with the additional info stating “desperate to reconnect with his estranged (and unnamed) daughter; he will stop at nothing to get her back.”. However, no more details were shared on Cross’ original character for the fourth instalment of The Umbrella Academy, with promises that more will be coming soon.
Everything We Know About Season 4

The Hargreeves family are all left in a tricky situation at the end of the third season, the Hargreeves family being Elliot Page as Victor, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Five, Justin H. Min as Ben, Ritu Arya as Lila and Colm Feore as Reginald. While they fix one problem, many more issues arise as this has become the typical process for their family outings across the series, with the third season’s finale leaving the family in a completely new timeline.
Reginald Hargreeves, who adopted the Hargreeves children and was revealed to be an alien, attempts to rewrite history during the finale of the third instalment, with Allison Hargreeves tinkering with Reginald’s plans at the very last minute. Reginald’s plan was to essentially reset their whole timeline so that he could prevent everything that had gone bad in the other timelines, which is what appears to happen during the final moments of the episode.
The Hargreeves find themselves in a completely different timeline at the end of season 3, with the realisation that their powers have vanished, along with the fact that Reginald is more successful than ever with dozens of skyscrapers bearing his name. Abigail Hargreeves, Reginald’s wife, is also revealed to be alive in this new timeline, along with a shot of Ben travelling by train in South Korea.
What the finale shouts louder than most, is that fans will definitely have to tune in for the final season once it lands on Netflix, with more unanswered questions than ever before, the final episodes have been perfectly set up.
The Umbrella Academy‘s final season is expected to release sometime in late 2023 or early to mid-2024, exclusively on Netflix for streaming.
