Despite the news that Dune: Part Two has been delayed until 2024, director Denis Villeneuve has provided an update on its potential sequel.
Dune: Part Two was originally set to release in theatres on November 3, due to the strikes the sequel to the 2021 Dune has been delayed until March 2024.
It was originally one of the most anticipated theatrical titles of the year but will now have to try and hold that title for next year’s list of scheduled releases.
Will There Be A Dune: Part Three?
While talking to Empire, the Dune director confirmed that “there are words on paper” in regard to a potential Dune: Part Three movie.
Villeneuve shared his own hopes of a third movie being brought into existence as he told Empire that making a Dune trilogy “would be the dream”.

He also confirmed that plans for a third movie also exist in the form of “word on paper” as opposed to just being simple thoughts within his own head.
Potentially meaning that the third Dune movie was already in early development prior to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes commencing.
However, a third Dune movie has not yet been officially announced as of writing and probably won’t until closer to the release of Dune: Part Two.
What Will Dune: Part Three Be About?
During the same discussion with Empire, details of the third Dune movie’s storyline were shared as the director confirmed that the storyline would be based on the Frank Herbert novel “Dune Messiah”.
Herbert’s “Dune Messiah” directly follows his 1965 “Dune”, with Villeneuve’s first two Dune movies set to cover the entire first novel’s storyline.
Villeneuve went on to explain that the Messiah storyline was only written by Herbert due to his readers seeing Paul Atreides as a heroic character, something that the famous author never intended.
“Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what [Herbert] wanted to do.” He added that his Dune adaptation “is closer to [Herbert’s] idea that it’s actually a warning.”
Dennis Villeneuve Plans To Pass Dune Torch
It was also noted that Villeneuve’s plan is to hand the directorial torch to somebody else after the potential third Dune movie.
If a third movie isn’t green-lit, which is unlikely, then the director could technically be handing his torch over after the upcoming instalment.
