Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, may have just confirmed the recent rumours that Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Boys) has been in talks to star as the live-action version of Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, both a remake and live-action adaptation of the popular video game series that has now been going strong since the early 1990s. There have been whispers as of late that Urban was in final talks to be starring as the cocky and hilarious Johnny Cage, which would fit in nicely with Urban’s recent outings as Billy Butcher, as the two character’s personalities aren’t too different in comparison, at least for the better part. When it comes to both Butcher and Cage’s sheer self-confidence and arrogance, it becomes clear why Urban would be up for the role.
Boon took to Twitter today to post a recent Bosslogic design of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, in the style of a Mortal Kombat 12 poster, along with tagging Urban himself, causing fans to truly believe that this is the official confirmation that the rumours were true. However, Urban has yet to be officially confirmed to be playing the live-action Johnny Cage, despite the fact that Boon, the co-creator himself, took to social media to tease fans about it, leaving fans to speculate and theorise until an official casting announcement is made by the cast and crew of Mortal Kombat 2.
Ed Boon Teases Fans Online, Tags Karl Urban
You can see below the tweet mentioned earlier in this news article, showing Boon captioning a Twitter post with “Nice job Bosslogic”, along with “Mortal Kombat”, and “Johnny Cage”, and the tagging of Karl Urban’s official account, opening up a wormhole of speculation to begin in the tweet’s thread.
Who’s In Mortal Kombat 2?
As of writing, the confirmed cast for the Mortal Kombat sequel is Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi, aka Scorpion, Lewis Tan as the original and returning role of Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as the Thunder God Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang.
Taslim’s Bi-Han was known as Sub-Zero in both the video game series and the live-action movie, however, in this sequel, Taslim will be starring as Noob Saibot, just as Bi-Han became in the game’s storyline, due to the aftermath of the final battle seen in the first movie’s final act.
