Disney and 20th Century’s sequel to Matt Reeves’ War of the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has received an optimistic release update.
As shared by The Direct, the fourth instalment of the Planet of the Apes reboot is still currently scheduled to release on May 24, next year.
This may come as a surprise to some who have been following the news on the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that have resulted in various Hollywood titles being delayed. According to Disney’s release schedule, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will not be affected at all by the current situation.
Everything We Know So Far
Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to continue the rebooted series originally starring Andy Serkis as Caesar the Ape.
The Batman director Matt Reeves, who helmed Dawn and War, will now be passing the torch over to Wes Ball who is best known for directing the massively popular Maze Runner movie franchise.

Starring in the next movie in the Planet of the Apes franchise has The Witcher star Freya Allan who has been widely theorised to be playing the adult Nova.
Nova was introduced during the events of War of the Planet of the Apes as a young child and was played by Amiah Miller.
Also starring alongside Allan includes Dichen Lachman, William H. Macy, Kevin Durand, Owen Teague, Peter Macon, Sara Wiseman, and Neil Sandilands.
Jessica Jones star Eka Darville has also been cast with Lydia Peckham, Travis Jeffery, Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi, and Nina Gallas also confirmed.
When Will Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Be Set?
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems to be set at least 6-10 years after War of the Planet of the Apes, so the better part of a decade-long time jump.
War of the Planet of the Apes was set in the year 2023, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will most likely be set somewhere between 2029 – 2033.
If Allan indeed stars as an older Nova, this would mean that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be set around the same time as the 1968 classic, in terms of how old Nova was during the original movie.

Nova was in her early 20s during the original 1968 version of Planet of the Apes, originally played by Linda Harrison alongside Charlton Heston.
Freya Allan is also in her early 20s, which adds fuel to the theory that she has been cast as an older Nova, and opens up many more questions.
Such as whether Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to introduce a reimagined version of Heston’s George Taylor, the main protagonist from the original Planet of the Apes movie series.
Only time will tell and there probably won’t be many more updates on this title until the ongoing WGA/SAG strikes come to a reasonable resolution.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases on May 24, 2024.
