As shared by Variety, Disney and Marvel executives reportedly discussed backup plans earlier this year in regard to Jonathan Majors’ ongoing legal issues. Majors who currently stars as Kang the Conquerer, Marvel Studios’ main ‘Multiverse Saga’ Avengers-level villain, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Majors’ most recent involvement in the MCU is in the current Disney+ series Loki, where he stars alongside Tom Hiddleston as a multiversal Kang variant who goes by the name Victor Timely.
It’s been long known by fans of the ever-expanding superhero franchise that Kang has been set up to be the main villain of the upcoming Avengers sequels. However, according to Variety, studio execs may be thinking of changing their plan to another major villain instead – Doctor Doom.
Kang’s Replacement Has Been Found
It seems to be that Marvel Studios and Disney have been discussing a way to pivot from Majors’ Kang, as opposed to recasting him entirely – potentially leaving a door open for Majors to still have a part to play.
Whether Majors remains a key player in the MCU all comes down to the result of his ongoing legal issues, hence why discussions such as these have been started in the first place.
It should be noted that the fourth Avengers movie is currently called The Kang Dynasty, something that was heavily teased during the MCU movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Variety reports that a dealmaker who has seen the ending of Loki season 2 says “Marvel is truly fu**ed with the whole Kang angle, they haven’t had an opportunity to rewrite until very recently [due to the WGA strike],” and that the dealmaker doesn’t “see a path to how they move forward with [Majors].”
Another Avengers sequel in motion is Secret Wars, a storyline based directly on a Marvel Comics arc – Doctor Doom features as one of several villains throughout these events, which explains why the fan-favourite villain is next in line if Majors’ Kang fails to remain on top of the villain hierarchy.
