Mortal Kombat fans have long tinkered with the thought that Warner Bros. characters Scooby-Doo and Shaggy could one day end up being added as playable DLC characters, due to the game itself being published by Warner Bros. Games.

Although the in-house characters would be an easy add to the game, legally, co-creator Ed Boon has spoken out on the idea with a not-so-positive update for those expecting to one day play as Shaggy and Scoob against iconic Mortal Kombat characters.
See below for what Boon had to say.
Ed Boon’s Scooby-Doo x Mortal Kombat Update
While talking to Rolling Stone, Boon mentioned that despite sharing Mortal Kombat-inspired versions of both Shaggy and Scooby-Doo to his social media accounts, he has in fact never actually “tried to get” the characters into one of the Mortal Kombat game instalments.
“We haven’t even tried to get, like, Scooby Doo,” he told Rolling Stone. He added that “they just don’t match. I’m sure if we tried, they’d say, “No, we don’t want to get Scooby Doo’s head cut off.”

Something fans of the popular fighting game series have said in the past is similar to Boon’s comments, people probably wouldn’t want to see their childhood favourites being gruesomely torn apart by characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena, etc.
Regardless of how easy it would be for NetherRealm Studios to add the characters into the game in terms of legal licencing, Boon confirms it would just be too hard to see Scooby-Doo get his “head cut off”.
However, the co-creator did note prior to making this comment how the studio has already managed to add so many other popular characters, as he told Rolling Stone: “Honestly, we’ve been crazy fortunate in the sense that we’ve had the big, heavy hitters – Terminator, Alien, Predator, Robocop, Rambo – and then all the horror ones: Jason [Voorhees], Texas Chainsaw [Leatherface], and just… Freddy Krueger!”
Boon even revealed that Keanu Reeves’ John Wick is currently one of his top priorities to get into the franchise, however, they couldn’t get him into Mortal Kombat 1 due to none other than legal reasons.

Maybe Reeves’ John Wick will be in the next game, there’s still some surprise guests coming to Mortal Kombat 1 as the second DLC aka Kombat Pack 2 roster has yet to be announced.
Until then, happy gaming.
Mortal Kombat 1 is now available to purchase and play on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Microsoft Windows.
