FTWD Season 8, Episode 2 Recap
The episode starts off with an isolated June Dorie, played by Jenna Elfman, who walks around a riverside and before the fifth minute even hits, she pulls out a rifle and shoots someone on a boat, which is then revealed that she only shot the man with a dart to knock him out.
June then obtains the boat, brings it to shore, and then proceeds to cut off a finger from the unconscious stranger, which she does by numbing the hand to prevent the stranger from waking up. Once the removal of the finger is complete, she sends the boat back into the river to let the stream sail the stranger toward the stranger’s original destination, presumably.
Hilariously almost, June then hears distressed people on a radio due to the stranger being found with one less finger, she then puts the finger into a jar… of more fingers, and the talking from the radio makes it clear that she has been doing this for a while and that they are all after her.
Shortly after this, a man called Adrian played by Jonathan Medina shows up at June’s house, and begs her to help him find his daughter, claiming that the strangers on the boats are responsible for her disappearance, this makes it fully clear that the strangers are a part of PADRA.
Adrian is told to leave by June, as she refuses to help him find his daughter, however, he says he will continue to ask until she says yes, he does leave though, but it is clear he will return.
Later, June is seen staring down her scope at another boat, this time with multiple strangers, and she again knocks them out and takes them to shore, but then realises that two of the strangers were Dwight and Sherry, however, they had masks over their heads.
A little boy then confronts June with a gun, before she can do anything else, this gives Dwight and Sherry enough time to wake up and talk it out with June to stop her from doing anything else, they tell June that the little boy needs surgery, and ask June to perform it seeing that she is medically trained, she eventually accepts due to the fact that the little boy is clearly in pain.
It is revealed during this point that the little boy, whose name is Finch, is actually Dwight and Sherry’s son, however, due to PADRE’s rules, they have never been able to tell him that they are his biological parents, and he has just lived his life in a similar way to Morgan’s Daughter.
June, Dwight, Sherry, and Finch all then head to an abandoned train that is full of walkers and medical equipment, the train is revealed to have been a lab of sorts that June worked in while she was a part of PADRA, also revealing that she escaped PADRA and has been cutting off fingers from their soldiers since her departure.
Adrian then returns, as foreshadowed during the opening 10 minutes, this time a bit more aggressive as he instantly realised Dwight and Sherry are a part of PADRA, but they all end up working together due to the circumstances of Finch being knocked out pre-op.
They all realise around this point that they need power for June to perform the surgery, which is what they set out to do before everything starts turning south, with Dwight and Sherry falling through the roof of the train into a carriage full of walkers, and June almost being bitten before being saved by Adrian.
The little boy, aka Finch, also wakes up during these events and even ends up taking down a walker, which he calls carrion due to PADRE naming them that. Once all the chaos ends, Dwight and Sherry reveal to Finch that they are actually his parents, while also telling him that they don’t want to take him back to PADRE, which overwhelms Finch right before having to put him back into pre-op.
Adrian then finds his daughter on the same train, however, she has turned and it is clear that she was one of June’s patients throughout her time experimenting, which is revealed to be experiments to find a cure, with the main test involving a large amount of radiation to stop the infection, which never worked on any according to June, and just ended up killing everyone.
June is confronted by an extremely angry Adrian upon finding this out, he almost kills her but she manages to explain everything to him, and also explains why she did what PADRE wanted in the first place, he lets her go before heading into a carriage full of walkers, one of them being his child, and lets them all chomp away at him.
This is when the episode heads into its final minutes, with the ending going extremely south in an unexpected turn of events as PADRE soldiers, including Maya Eshet’s Shrike, show up and overpower the main protagonist of the episode.
Shrike then threatens everyone by putting a walker’s head above Finch’s unconscious body, something that instantly distresses Dwight and Sherry, of course, however, Finch is shockingly bitten by the animated head, around the shoulder area, leaving him infected, PADRA then cut off June’s trigger finger just before the scene cuts to Lennie James’ Morgan and Kim Dickens’ Madison being escorted in the back of a PADRE truck, which Madison causes a diversion long enough for Morgan to escape.
