The 2003 Disney movie Freaky Friday will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this December, and it seems that a sequel may finally happen if Jamie Lee Curtis’ latest update is anything to go by. Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan was the successful remake of the 1976 classic starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, also titled Freaky Friday. Despite the financial success of the first instalment, a sequel never saw the light of day, leaving fans of the movie requesting a Freaky Friday 2 for almost two decades, which might finally be happening.
When it comes to movies, success isn’t always enough to convince studios to green-light a sequel, however, we are now in the era of Hollywood where legacy sequels are a sure thing, making this the perfect time to produce a second Freaky Friday movie. While speaking to Variety, Jamie Lee Curtis provided an update on the hopeful sequel, Curtis told Variety “It’s going to happen,” she said. “Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”
Curtis also posted to her official Instagram account an image of herself with Lohan, writing a caption that reads “It’s Friday. I’m just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!”, tagging both Disney and Lohan’s Instagram accounts on the post, this was only a couple weeks ago as of writing this article, on February 14th 2023.
Lohan responded in the comment section of Curtis’ post with three emojis, fingers crossed emoji, love heart eyes emoji, and a two hands up emoji, clearly expressing interest in the potential sequel. Updates on a possible Freaky Friday 2 project have been offered time after time across the years, with Curtis being at the centre of most of the public discussions, however, it appears that things may be set in stone as Curtis says “‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”.
It is now being speculated that the Freaky Friday sequel is guaranteed to be greenlit, if not greenlit already over at Disney, with the chance that if greenlit the movie could end up being a Disney Plus exclusive. However, no official announcement has been made as of yet, and Disney is yet to comment on Curtis’ latest update. Lohan only has one upcoming project listed on her IMDB page, with Curtis having four upcoming projects two of which are in post-production, so the schedules definitely seem open for a sign-up on Freaky Friday 2.
