Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s Hamilton Thomas Kail has been hired to direct the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Moana starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
As mentioned, Kail is known for directing the original production of the extremely successful Broadway show Hamilton created by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Disney’s original 2016 animated Moana movie also had Miranda as a songwriter.

It has yet to be announced if the live-action movie will feature any original songs. However, it’s expected some of the original classic tunes will be featured.
Who’s Playing The Live-Action Moana?
Auli’i Cravalho who voiced the original animated Moana has already confirmed that she will not be playing the live-action version in Disney’s remake.
Disney has yet to announce who will be taking on the task to bring Moana to the live-action realm. However, Cravalho will be serving as the exec-producer and will have a hand in who gets picked to take on the role.
“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career, in this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital the casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”

Who’s Playing The Live-Action Maui?
As mentioned, Dwayne Johnson will officially be starring as the live-action Maui in Disney’s Moana remake. Johnson aka The Rock also voiced the character in the 2010 animated classic and was the face of the official announcement earlier this year.

Additional casting details for the live-action take on Moana are currently being kept tightly under wraps. This will most likely be due to the fact that the project is still in early development. However, casting news will be expected to start dropping sometime in 2023 to 2024. So stay tuned for more updates.

Although Disney and Dwayne Johnson announced that the live-action Moana was in the works, the production has not yet started. So a trailer won’t be expected to drop for some time yet. However, frequent updates from the cast and crew are expected.
Live-Action Moana Release Date
Disney’s live-action Moana has not yet announced a release date. Live-action Disney movies typically take quite a few years to produce. So it’s safe to assume that the live-action Moana may not be released until 2025 to sometime in 2028.
