It has almost been a decade since the debut of Henry Cavill’s Superman on the big screen in 2013, the film that gave DC fans the ‘Man of Steel’ they truly deserved. However, despite the admiration that we all have for Henry Cavill, plus the fact that it is almost impossible to envision anybody else when thinking about the caped superhero, it seems that his era has now come to an end.
James Gunn, and Henry Cavill, took to the internet today to confirm the ending of the Superman we have all come to know and love, with the revelation of a new film already in the works. Surprisingly enough, during the same reveal that Cavill was let go, Gunn took to Twitter to provide some information on DC’s next installment.
New Warner Bros. Superman Movie Details
The latest details on the James Gunn and Peter Safran DC takeover at Warner Bros. Pictures is that a new Superman movie is currently in development. The film’s “story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life” as said by Gunn on Twitter, while he also declared the end of Henry Cavill’s future as Superman.
Now, let’s break that down first, notice how the description states that the film will be set in the earlier part of “Superman’s” life, not Clark Kents. So before we assume this means an origin story, and that alone, we should also take the possibility that he means Superman’s life and not Kent’s. Zack Snyder originally skipped through a lot of the hero-building scenes to quickly get to the General Zod match down, which at the time worked really well in 2013’s Man of Steel.
Although a new film has been announced, no casting details have surfaced online, probably because nobody has actually been cast yet as the film is in the very early stages of development. Henry Cavill also delivered this “sad news”, stating that hearing that his time had come to an end wasn’t “the easiest”, but he “respects” that there is a new universe being built.
James Gunn also confirmed that he has been writing the next Superman flick for “a while”, and is still writing but just doesn’t know who is directing it yet, which may be revealed in early 2023 during the big plan reveal.
Henry Cavill Might Actually Be Staying
Time to look on the bright side, which is that James Gunn reassured us all that he still might have some plans for Henry Cavill to stay involved in the DC universe, just not as Superman. According to Gunn, there was a discussion of a “number of exciting possibilities” for the future of the next DC phase over at Warner Bros. Pictures.
There just wasn’t any tease or confirmation on who Henry Cavill might be eyed to portray in the future, so start guessing and posting your theories online, because now’s your chance.
