Warner Bros. Pictures’ live-action DC movie Blue Beetle has had DC fans questioning its DCU status since the new plans for the franchise were revealed by James Gunn.
While talking to Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You, Gunn confirmed Blue Beetle is a part of the DC Universe: “The first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle, and the first DCU movie is Superman [Legacy].”
This may sound confusing at first as both Blue Beetle and Superman: Legacy are DC movies, so how can the first movie not be the first DCU movie?
Well, Gunn’s view on Blue Beetle is that due to it being an origin story, it doesn’t really connect to the wider DCU. It has no major impact on the past or future stories from either old DC titles or the new DC Universe stories over at Warner Bros.

Superman: Legacy on the other hand is the first main canonical movie set in the DCU that was planned by Gunn and Peter Safran exclusively for the new slate.

Blue Beetle comes to theatres on August 18, 2023.
