Blue Beetle spoilers below!!!
The arrival of Blue Beetle heralds a new transitional phase in the DC Universe amid the ongoing reboot led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the newly appointed CO-CEOs of DC Studios.
Unfortunately, the film is not faring well at the box office despite the positive reviews. It appears that DC has another box-office bomb on the horizon.
Starring Xolo Maridueña in the titular role, Blue Beetle tells the story of Jaime Reyes, who becomes a superhero when an ancient Scarab physically bonds to him.
Initially conceived as a standalone film, there are several indications that Blue Beetle may integrate into James Gunn’s revamped DCU.
Blue Beetle has subtle references to Batman, Superman, the Flash, and cities like Gotham City, Metropolis, and Central City. Notably, Jaime sports a Gotham Law hoodie, and Uncle Rudy (George Lopez) humorously critiques Batman, branding the vigilante as “a fascist.
Although the film is largely self-contained lacking any surprising cameo by other DC characters. The mid-credits scene provides a glimpse into upcoming developments within the Blue Beetle storyline and its potential to feature in other DC projects.
Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle Mid-Credit Scene Reveal
Expect more than just one Blue Beetle to return in James Gunn’s DCU…
The film ends with Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) successfully connecting with the Scarab, becoming proficient in the Blue Beetle suit. Additionally, Jaime’s crush, Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), assumes control of Kord Industries after thwarting her aunt Victoria Kord’s (Susan Sarandon) plans to weaponize the Scarab and create a robotic army.
In the mid-credits scene, It is revealed that Jenny’s father Ted Kord, who was a previous Blue Beetle, is alive. In the comics, Ted Kord was the second Blue Beetle, following the original hero Dan Garrett, who also gets mentioned in the movie.
We are likely to witness Ted Kord in live-action, actively aiding Jaime in his superhero exploits in the potential Blue Beetle sequel.
There is also a possibility that Ted Kord’s version of Blue Beetle could make an appearance in other upcoming DC projects. Although there are no official words in this regard at this point.
Where Ted Kord’s DCU Blue Beetle May Show Up
Now that we know he’s on his way, it’s just a matter of when and where he will appear first…
The upcoming DC lineup features a live-action Booster Gold TV series. Within DC comics, Booster Gold is a 25th-century superhero who employs futuristic time-travel technology to journey back to the present.
He’s beloved by fans for his playful and flamboyant demeanour and frequently partners with Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle. These dynamic allies have shared comic crossovers, collaborated as Justice League members, and co-led the recent series Blue and Gold.
In a recent Instagram post, James Gunn cryptically stated that Jaime Reyes will be “an amazing part of the DCU going forward.” While Gunn and Safran are charting the course for their rebooted DC Universe lineup, no definite future appearances for Jaime (Blue Beetle) have been confirmed.
However, it is reasonable to speculate about the possibility of Jaime Reyes making an appearance or the introduction of a version of Ted Kord in the Booster Gold TV show.
While there’s limited information about the Booster Gold series. Considering that Ted Kord and Booster Gold are frequently depicted as a pair, a live-action team-up might be what Gunn is hinting at for the future of the DC Universe.
Directed by Angel Manuel Soto and Starring Xolo Maridueña, George Lopez, and Susan Sarandon, Blue Beetle is currently playing in theaters.
