There have been concerns about possible delays for Superman: Legacy, but a recent production update brings good news for fans. The Man of Steel’s return to the big screen in the DC Universe (DCU) lineup might still be on track.
DC Studios‘ co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are teaming up to give Superman’s classic tale a bold makeover in the first film of the new DC Universe (DCU). Fans can expect Superman: Legacy to hit theaters in the summer of 2025, injecting new life into the superhero’s iconic story.
While there’s a lot of anticipation for the project, worries have cropped up because of the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are advocating for fair pay and compensation, which could potentially affect the movie’s production timeline.
Superman: Legacy’s Production Update
In May 2023, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, revealed that filming for Superman: Legacy was scheduled to start in January 2024, with the film’s highly anticipated release set for July 11, 2025.
A recent update from Variety provides a ray of hope. It mentions that if the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike wraps up by the end of 2023, production for the Superman reboot “can begin in the spring”.
The WGA writers’ strike has come to an official conclusion, but Superman: Legacy remains unscathed. James Gunn had already submitted the first draft of the script just before the strike began. He is set to come back and continue refining and editing the script for Superman: Legacy from where he previously left off.
Now, the main worry is centered on potential production delays caused by the actors’ strike and the needed preparations for filming to resume.
However, the Superman reboot has a chance to begin production by Spring 2024. Elsa Ramo, a managing partner at Ramo Law, who represented Image Entertainment and Skydance during the strikes, emphasized the studios’ goals. Their focus is on reviving projects that were on the brink of approval but got held up during the summer strikes, with the goal of ensuring these projects move forward successfully.
Amid the delay concerns, the excitement is building around Superman: Legacy, fueled by images of Corenswet preparing for his legendary role. Fans are eagerly waiting for the return of the Man of Steel to the silver screen.
