Jenna Ortega has quickly become increasingly popular these past few years. With that comes an increase in fans and sadly a fellow increase in not-so-nice internet users.
While talking to Elle Fanning on Variety‘s Actors on Actors, the Wednesday star opened up on how unexpected some of her following’s behaviour can be. Specifically on how some people seem to “prey” on her “vulnerability” which she reveals has caused difficulty to express herself honestly in fear of “jeopardising” her “[mental] health”
“I remember growing up and when I started creating this platform for myself. I just thought ‘I am going to be funny and I am going to share whatever jokes (..) and I’m gonna be honest and I’m gonna be myself and I’m gonna be vulnerable’
I want people to be able to watch movies and also get to know people behind the camera, feel like they’re obtainable, realise that people should never be put on a pedestal – like nobody is more special than another because of what they do.
Then the more, I guess, I’ve been exposed to the world in a sense, people prey on that and take advantage of that and they see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that – twist it in a way that you don’t always expect. So it’s just like a – it’s so so strange – sorry, I don’t normally do this [cry], I didn’t even feel like doing this [cry] but it’s like such a hard thing to balance because how do you be honest without jeopardising your own [mental] health”

Ortega has various upcoming projects that all bear some incredibly high anticipation such as Tim Burton’s second season of Wednesday on Netflix and Beetlejuice 2. Not to mention the recent rumours that she will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Charlie Cox in Daredevil: Born Again. However, the rumours have not been confirmed by the cast and crew of the MCU title.
As of writing Ortega is 20 years old with an already whopping 40 million plus followers on her Instagram account alone. Although she remains proud of what she has accomplished, as she should, her honesty on this matter will surely inspire many.
