John Stamos, known for his roles in Full House and Grandfathered, recently shared how he almost stole Jim Carey’s iconic role of the Grinch.

After recently starring in Saturday Night Live‘s James Austin Johnson podcast “Tis the Grinch Holiday”, in which the comedian dresses up as the character, Stamos revealed that he auditioned for the mischievous role.

The now 61-year-old shared how the heavy prosthetics that were necessary for the role, gave him an allergic reaction.

“I was originally going to play [the Grinch] in the movie that Jim Carrey got. Did you know that? I went to the makeup test.”

“I was allergic to the prosthetics,” he added.

Although some believed Stamos’ claim, his representatives later confirmed he was only joking and had never auditioned for the role.

Stamos’ remark about the cosmetics wasn’t fully fictitious though, as Rick Baker, the make-up artist behind the legendary look, shared that it took “two and a half hours” to apply the prosthetics each time.

Carrey’s performance in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been a must-watch every year since its release in 2000.

The Canadian-American actor did give an insight into how hard it was to continuously have to be in the suit and makeup.

“[Carrey] was having a lot of trouble with the Grinch suit, so they brought a guy in who actually teaches people how to handle torture, and he gave me a couple of tips.”

“You just forget [the pain].”

“Sitting around in that suit was not too fun, but performing in it was amazing.”

However, the hard work from both Carrey and artist Baker paid off as the film won the Oscar that year for best make-up.

The film always went on to gross over $300 million at the box office as well as becoming that year’s sixth highest-grossing film.
