Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has revealed now scrapped plans for Keanu Reeves’ John Wick to have been in NetherRealm’s 2023 instalment, Mortal Kombat 1, that never came to pass due to legal reasons.
The game includes a variety of pop culture characters such as J. K. Simmons’ Omni-Man from the animated Invincible series, Antony Starr’s Homelander from The Boys, and even a Jean-Claude Van Damme-voiced skin for Johnny Cage.

Boon revealed new details to Rolling Stone, where he revealed scrapped plans to hopes for both Mortal Kombat 1 and potentially the game franchise’s future.
Ed Boon Really Wants John Wick In Mortal Kombat
While talking to Rolling Stone, Boon revealed that he and his team actually “tried to get” Keanu Reeves’ John Wick as a character in Mortal Kombat 1, but “didn’t get it” due to the same old boring legal reasons.
This is something that Boon has spoken out on many times in the past. He has often told interviewers that if it wasn’t for legalities, many beloved characters would have made it into the franchise already, John Wick being one of them.

Although John Wick never made it into the new instalment, Boon did mention in the same interview that there were ideas to have famous actors play and voice “every character in [Mortal Kombat 1]“.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 14 for early access with the Premium Edition and on the 19 for Standard Edition owners. It’ll be released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC Via Epic Games Store and Steam.
