Kumail Nanjiani has finally revealed why he hasn’t returned to voicing the almighty Prismo in Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake on X (previously Twitter.)
Nanjiani, who’s best known for his work on Eternals, Silicon Valley and Obi-Wan Kenobi, was the original voice actor behind Prismo, an omnipresent cosmic deity who keeps watch of the Adventure Time multiverse within his yellow cubed Time Room.
First appearing in the original show’s season five episode “Finn the Human”, Prismo isn’t your typical god: he’s actually a manifestation of an old man’s dream who likes to chill with the Cosmic Owl (M. Emmet Walsh), the show’s dream deity.
Throughout the show, Prismo makes friends with the original Jake (John DiMaggio) and the two grow close with Prismo lending his own artisanal teleporting pickles in case they want to hang out. He also continues to grant wishes, though likes to help Jake out.
However, things take a turn when the Lich (Ron Perlman) continues to face him, whether it be causing a universal crisis in the episode “Crossover” or being killed to help Finn (Jeremy Shada) find his father Martin (Stephen Root) in “Wake Up”.
What Happened?
In Fionna and Cake, Prismo isn’t voiced by Nanjiani. Instead, the role has been taken over by Sean Rohani, who’s done work in movies like Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and video games like the Final Fantasy VII remake.
On September 3 in a now-deleted thread, Nanjiani confirmed that he hasn’t returned to voice the Wish Master once again in Fionna and Cake due to not receiving any offer, though the character remains one of his favorites.
However, Fionna and Cake showrunner and executive producer Adam Muto revealed that the team had sent several offers to Nanjiani’s representatives but was respectfully declined.
Then, Nanjiani replied that his representatives had never told him about the offer to voice Prismo again and would be doing a bit of digging himself to discover what happened behind the scenes.
Fans of the show have taken to voice their displeasure towards Nanjiani’s representatives and what happened.
However, they still have their hopes (and dreams!) of Nanjiani returning to voice one of the charming Adventure Time characters once more.
Maybe one day, we’ll finally get to see Prismo and Jake together again, but we’ll have to wait and see what Fionna and Cake makes of things first.
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is now streaming on Max – two new episodes release every Thursday.
