A live-action version of How To Train Your Dragon is reportedly in the works according to a new report from industry insider Daniel Richtman. The animated trilogy’s last film How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World released in theaters back in 2019, with the first movie kicking off the trilogy a whole nine years earlier in 2010. The three installments feature cast members such as Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Gerald Butler, and countless more talented actors, who all voice dragon-obsessed Vikings from a mythical time period. On top of the almost decade-long trilogy, there are also four seasons of an animated series called DreamWorks Dragons due to the success of the franchise.
Director Dean Deblois is detailed in this new report as being attached as both writer and director of the film, which would work well as Deblois was the writer on all the How To Train Your Dragon projects up to date. Sadly, this new report hasn’t had any official confirmation or comment from the studios, however, if it is true and Deblois helms the project then at least it will be in safe hands. The reported live-action How To Train Your Dragon doesn’t contain any information on casting or expected release, so hopefully, there will be some more clarity sometime this year.

Why Dean Deblois Could Make This Work
If anyone could make a live-action adaptation of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise, Dean Deblois would be a great choice based on his experience with the story alone. Deblois has been a writer on multiple successful animated movie franchises, one being Lilo & Stitch and of course his main credit as the writer of the entire How To Train Your Dragon trilogy. However, a huge live-action project such as this would be a first for Deblois, so bringing the animated movies into the live-action realm would see the writer dipping into new waters.
Lilo & Stitch was also announced in 2022 to be getting a live-action treatment, with Dean Fleischer Camp being attached to direct, which could have maybe sparked the idea for How To Train Your Dragon to follow suit. These details, however, are all just a report that hasn’t come from an official cast or crew member, so we will have to patiently wait for a comment. Hopefully, the report bears some truth along with these details, and if not, then maybe it could potentially reveal if fans are keen on the idea.
