After being a no-show at the 2023 Super Bowl, our first official look at The Marvels is here. The movie’s lead stars are Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. It will also feature Samuel L. Jackson and Park Sea-joon.
Marvel Studios officially released a new poster for The Marvels, captioned “Higher. Further. Faster. Together.” on Friday.
Yet Another Delay For ‘The Marvels’
The tweet confirmed a delay for the movie, as it was initially scheduled to release on July 28, 2023.
The delay is likely due to the new developments by Disney CEO Bob Iger, as he said that they will be putting more effort into the curation of their Marvel Studios content. “In additionally we are going to lean more into our franchises, our core franchises, and our brands. I talked about curation in general entertainment. We have to be better at curating the Disney, and the Pixar, and the Marvel, and the Star Wars of it all.”
However, this isn’t the first time this movie has been delayed. When it was still in its infancy, the Captain Marvel sequel was listed for a July 28, 2022 release. After being delayed yet again from November 11, 2022, to February 17; it switched release dates with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and went further down the release calendar to July 28, 2023.
While we don’t know the exact reason for the delay, it was likely due to the fact that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 releases on May 5, 2023; which would allow more breathing room for the movie. This also allows for more time to be spent on post-production, which hopefully translates to a better output.
This basically confirms that the movie will release after Secret Invasion ends, which is scheduled for a Spring 2023 release. This probably means that the movie will pick up after the events of Secret Invasion. While we have yet to receive a poster for the series, the promotional campaign is expected to ramp up soon.
Why Was ‘Quantumania’ Released First?
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained the decision to kick off Phase 5 of the MCU with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania:
“We wanted to kick off Phase Five with Ant-Man because he’d earned that position, to not simply be the back-up or the comic relief, but to take his position at the front of the podium of the MCU.”
Kevin Feige
The synopsis of the movie reads:
Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.’
