During Sony’s 2022 CinemaCon presentation, the studio announced an El Muerto movie is in development with Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist Bad Bunny attached to star.
The movie was set for a 2024 release, but after the initial announcement, no further development updates or casting announcements for the movie were made. This gave rise to speculation on a potential delay, which wouldn’t be surprising considering the movie’s release date lands just a month prior to Madame Web, giving it barely any space to breath at the box office.
According to insider Daniel Richtman’s Patreon page, Sony’s El Muerto will be filming in Los Angeles this fall. This comes soon after Bad Bunny’s publicist revealed to TIME that El Muerto was “at a standstill,” despite the film still set to release in January of next year. The publicist clarified that the movie is “in development.”

Who Is El Muerto?
In Marvel comics, the character of El Muerto aka Juan Carlos was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked the webslinger before being stung by Spider-Man with a paralyzing poison. After his oppressor El Dorado came to claim his life, he was saved by Spider-Man, after which the two team up to defeat Dorado.
It is unknown whether the live-action adaptation will be influenced by the comics.
