Breaking: Mason Thames (The Black Phone) and The Last of Us star Nico Parker has officially been cast in Universal’s live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. Thames is set to star as the main protagonist Hiccup who was originally voiced by Jay Baruchel in the animated classic. Parker has been cast as Astrid who was originally voiced by America Ferrera.
The live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated movie How to Train Your Dragon was reported earlier this year. Now Universal has cast its two main human characters who will be directed by original director Dean DeBlois who is also set to write.

Thames starred alongside Ethan Hawke in Universal’s horror movie The Black Phone. Parker was seen more recently as Sarah in HBO’s The Last of Us. The two will now team up to bring an animated franchise adored by millions to the live-action realm.
This is the first casting news for the 2025 remake, however, it’s safe to assume that additional casting announcements will be coming soon. With DeBlois on board to direct, fans can be assured that the franchise’s live-action reboot will be in safe hands.

Mason Thames (The Black Phone) has been cast as the live-action Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III who was originally voiced by Jay Baruchel. Hiccup is the son of Stoick who was originally voiced by Gerard Butler. Thames will officially be the main protagonist in Universal’s live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon.
Nico Parker Cast as Astrid
Nico Parker (The Last of Us) will officially be starring as the live-action Astrid in Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake. Parker will be a fellow dragon trainer as well as the main love interest to Thames’ Hiccup if the original story is anything to go by.

The original 2010 animated cast included Jay Baruchel as Hiccup, Gerard Butler as Hiccup’s father Stoick, Craig Ferguson as Gobber, America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, Barbie) as Astrid, along with Jonah Hill’s Snotlout, Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s Fishlegs, T.J. Miller’s Tuffnut, Kristen Wiig’s Ruffnut, Kieron Elliott’s Hoark the Haggard, Ashley Jensen’s Phlegma the Fierce, and David Tennant as Spitelout.
