Matthew Vaughn recently shared his aspirations to work on the Star Wars franchise. In a conversation with Screen Rant at NYCC, Vaughn expressed his desire to reboot the Star Wars universe with a focus on the main trio from the original trilogy.
Here is what Vaughn told the outlet:
But for me now, if someone asked me, what would you do? For me to get back into the world of somebody else’s characters and other franchises, I mean, I was joking. I said this as a joke, and now, yeah, maybe I would do it. If they wanted to reboot Star Wars, set the story with the Skywalkers. And then I’ll go, Hey, that will be interesting. Because for me, it’s got to be something so bold, so different, and so brave.
Matthew Vaughn also pointed out that numerous other franchises have undergone reboots, and he sees no reason why Star Wars should be an exception. He wants to bring a fresh perspective to the Star Wars franchise.
They said you can’t do that. I was like, There’ve been three Spider-Mans, Bonds. Like, what are you talking about? Why can’t that happen? I don’t control Star Wars, but I would do something big, brave, and with the great characters. I want to see Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewie doing their sh-t. Not some distant cousin. Who cares?
While the idea of rebooting the Star Wars universe might seem like a major shift, it offers the possibility of bringing back Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo through recasting. This could pave the way for fresh adventures for the trio while also weaving them into the broader story of the galaxy following their victory in Return of the Jedi.
Is Recasting The Original Trio A Good Idea?
The Star Wars universe has plenty of new opportunities to explore. Whether it is through familiar characters like Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and the Ghost Crew, original ones like Din Djarin, or entirely new eras like The Acolyte. Star Wars continues to evolve and grow across various mediums, including live-action, animation, books, and comics. Yet, the concept of recasting the original trio is an intriguing idea worth considering.
Many fans strongly believe that three iconic characters should remain a part of the ongoing narrative. Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker are beloved figures who won the hearts of many Star Wars fans. Given the current era of the Star Wars universe, it seems appropriate to explore ways to reintegrate them into the storyline. It is worth noting that Luke Skywalker did make appearances in The Mandalorian’s second season and The Book of Boba Fett, although some fans were critical of the technology used to de-age Mark Hamill.
If Star Wars were to go the way of Spider-Man, with a complete reboot, or James Bond, with a new actor playing the role, Vaughn’s idea of bringing back these beloved characters would certainly be logical.
