It’s now been two years since Teyonah Parris was introduced into the MCU as Monica Rambeau during the 2021 WandaVision series. Despite Monica gaining her superpowered abilities during her debut, we still have no confirmation on if her superhero alias will be Photon or Spectrum in the live-action adaptation. However, in a recent interview on the YouTube channel BLACK COMIC LORDS, writer Eve L. Ewing offered some insight into the confusion.
MCU fans, and especially comic book fans of the character, have been patiently waiting for the official reveal of Monica’s alias in the MCU. The debate originally started when the theory that Monica would go as Spectrum in the MCU was first shared online. However, in the recent BLACK COMIC LORDS interview, writer Eve L. Ewing may have just slyly spilt the beans as to what the Marvel Cinematic Universe will officially be going with.

Monica Rambeau’s Photon Confirmed?
When asked “Why did they [Marvel Comics] settle on Photon, in the comics? Knowing that the MCU she [Monica Rambeau] might be going as Spectrum?”, Eve responded with “so, you just said that in the MCU she might be going as Spectrum, and I have nothing else to say about that.”.
However, Eve continued to say that “the publishing side [Marvel Comics] and the MCU side do not communicate frequently” when it comes to characters and storylines. Although, Eve confirmed with BLACK COMIC LORDS that she “did not choose for her [Monica Rambeau] to be called Photon in this comic.”, hinting that the MCU may have had a part to play in the branding for the character. Essentially confirming that when giving Monica Rambeau the alias Photon in the comic that Eve was a writer for, the MCU may have chipped in on the alias itself. This could mean that the MCU is ensuring that Monica’s superhero name stays consistently the same between the comic world and the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe world.

Sadly, these were the only teased details from Eve, but she did agree to the suggestion that she would come back for another interview in July to talk all things The Marvels. It has been safely assumed that Photon will be the alias since it was the pilot calling card for Monica’s mother Maria in the Captain Marvel film. If that mixed with Eve’s hint doesn’t confirm anything, then surely nothing will until we get our official reveal from the sequel itself.
The Marvels comes to theatres on the 28th of July, 2023.
