Will Poulter stars in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film as the cosmic being Adam Warlock. Marvel Studios have recently released a new still that features Poulter in golden light – akin to how superheroes are depicted, but is he really a superhero?
Adam Warlock Origins
The character Adam Warlock first appeared in Fantastic Four #66-67, created by the greats Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, originally named “Him”. Warlock would later be developed further by Roy Thomas and Jim Starlin – a cosmic being that rebelled against his creators in order to create his own destiny, eventually becoming a legendary superhero going up against the likes of Thanos.
He is also a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, being an occultic cosmic sorcerer. Warlock was also featured in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy videogame, siding with the Guardians against his evil counterpart Magus. This membership relation of Warlock to the Guardians is important, being adapted in Gunn’s third film. However, it’s heavily implied that the Warlock will not be on the Guardian’s side.
New Look From Empire
In a recent article from Empire, James Gunn teased that “he’s not a good guy”, and “it’s a bit complicated.” Gunn has compared Warlock to an infant, possessing the emotional traits of not understanding life very well. Although he does not possess the physical traits of a baby – the 6ft 3 British Will Poulter has beefed up significantly for the role.
Last seen on the big screen in Midsommar, Poulter impressed Gunn enough to have him cast, crushing the online fan expectations of Tom Cruise as the Warlock. Gunn mentioned that he wanted someone youthful enough to handle both the dramatic and comedic chops – a staple of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, while also setting Warlock up for future films.
Oh yes, you read that right! Being one of the fan-favourite cosmic beings in the comics, it’d be a big, missed opportunity for Marvel to not continue his character further.
Adam Warlock is certainly an interesting character, one that has a big future ahead of him in the MCU – and Marvel would be amiss to write him out of the equation.
