DC has one more outing in its arsenal in 2023. Starring Jason Momoa, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is finally making its way to theaters this December after various delays.
The sequel to 2018’s Aquaman has generated a wave of enthusiasm among DC fans with its latest trailer.
The first Aquaman movie, starring Jason Momoa as the titular hero, turned out to be a critical and financial success, paving the way for its sequel.
Although the DCU is undergoing a hard reset by James Gunn, Aquaman continues to be an important part of the DCU. Now, new details have emerged about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Aquaman 2: New Plot Details
According to EW, Peter Safron, producer of the film, revealed that in The Lost Kingdom, Arthur Curry will team up with his half-brother, Orm, who was the first film’s villain to fight Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s Black Manta.
Black Manta is now a revenge-driven and formidable supervillain who possesses the Black Trident, granting him the power to control an ancient evil.
Peter Safron drew a comparison between the two brothers’ partnership and the iconic duo of Nick Nolte’s cop and Eddie Murphy’s convict from the 1982 action-comedy classic, 48 Hrs.
“They’re forced to work together, but they have no interest in being together,” says Peter Safron.
While Nolte and Murphy’s characters bickered on the gritty streets of San Francisco, Arthur and Orm engage in their conflicts across much stranger landscapes, encountering characters far more peculiar than the rowdy patrons of a redneck bar along their journey.
Saffron also revealed that Aquaman 2 will feature a greater dose of humor compared to the first installment.
“There is a humor in this movie that is far greater than even existed in the first.”
Aquaman 2 will be an Adventurous Tail
In the same recent conversation with EW, James Wan, the film’s director, confirmed that the upcoming Aquaman sequel will be a true adventurous tale and aims to break away from the conventional superhero movie formula.
The film will incorporate thrilling adventure elements that capture the essence of old-school Ray Harryhausen classics.
Ray Harryhausen, a special effects pioneer, is renowned for his work on classic films such as The Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and Jason and the Argonauts (1963).
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen as Black Manta, among others.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in theaters on December 20, 2023.
