Despite Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2023 DC movie Blue Beetle not yet being released in theatres, new official plot details via MovieMaker Magazine have already spoiled a potentially major character death.

It is said that Blue Beetle will explore “an afterlife that’s astounding and moving” which is inspired “in part” by a shot from Gabriel Gifueroa’s 1960 Best Foreign Language Film nominated movie Macario.

“Macario encounters Death’s cavern, filled with thousands of candles. The sight is breathtakingly designed, and Soto references it when Jamie [Reyes] visits his father Alberto [Reyes] in the afterlife.”

MovieMaker Magazine – Summer 2023

Confirming that Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle will also travel to the afterlife somehow, potentially teasing he may also die in the movie at some point.

“Damián Alcázar, the actor who plays my father, was so generous and wise and calm, I remember thinking it felt ethereal for Jamie [Reyes] to see his father, but it was just his soul. It wasn’t his body.

Xolo Maridueña

Maridueña told MovieMaker Magazine that this scene, in particular, was his favourite one out of the whole Blue Beetle movie.

Blue Beetle releases in theatres on August 18, 2023.
