Director Angel Manuel Soto recently confirmed that Maridueña’s Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle is considered to be the “first DCU character”.
“[Blue Beetle is] not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. (…) that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”

Joining Maridueña in Blue Beetle includes fellow cast members Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, Harvey Guillén as Dr. Sanchez, Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax, Becky G as the voice of Khaji-Da, with George Lopez as Uncle Rudy, among others.
Jamie Reyes will be bestowed with a suit of armour made out of alien technology when chosen by an alien relic to be its symbiotic host similar to Marvel’s Venom.
It’s currently unclear if there will be a Blue Beetle 2 or if Maridueña will be seen again as the character in the newly revamped DC Universe.
It has been said in the past that if the movie performs well then there may be a chance for the movie to turn into a multi-movie franchise.
Blue Beetle releases in theatres on August 18, 2023.
