Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed that he will be returning to Marvel Studios in 2024 to begin shooting for a new Doctor Strange-related project.
Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange from the MCU was last seen in the sequel movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, post-Spider-Man: No Way Home.
When talking to Nick Hackworth as shared by the official Alan Howard / JW3 Speaker Series YouTube channel, Cumberbatch surprisingly revealed the news.

Responding to Hackworth who asked what projects the Avengers: Endgame star currently has planned for the future, movie-wise, Cumberbatch confirmed that he is attached to at least one project next year for something “Marvel”-related.
“I think the only thing I know for certain is, um, there are some Marvel capers in the making next year”
Benedict Cumberbatch
Seemingly ruling out anything TV series-related as the discussion was solely about movies, at this point of the talk, potentially being for a number of upcoming MCU titles.
Blade? Spider-Man 4? Which Movie Will It Be?
Due to the number of projects planned to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next few years alone, it’s tricky to figure out which movie is being referenced.
Cumberbatch could even be attached to multiple projects next year as he only said “Marvel capers”, capers being another word for talks.
It could be speculated that his Doctor Strange will be attached to appear in upcoming titles such as Blade, Spider-Man 4, or even for Fantastic Four as anything is possible.

Due to Doctor Strange already having an extremely prominent role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it is unlikely he will be once again starring in the next instalment.
His tease seems to imply that he has a major role in whichever project is being referred to during his talk with Hackworth.
Is Doctor Strange 3 Happening Next Year?
Could this potentially be for a currently unannounced third Doctor Strange movie?
It’s no secret that Marvel Studios always have at least a couple of unannounced titles saved for future reveals, one potentially being for a Doctor Strange 3 movie.
After all, Charlize Theron (Fast X) was briefly introduced as Marvel’s Clea during the post-credit scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness aka Doctor Strange 2.
Theron’s Clea and Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange have both yet to be seen since in the MCU, maybe due to being busy with whatever a possible Doctor Strange 3 could be about.

Clea told Strange that he “caused an incursion” just before telling him that they are both going to “fix it” together, the incursion being when two universes begin to collide.
They are then both seen jumping through a portal of some kind into what appears to be the Dark Dimension, a clear set-up for a future instalment of the franchise.
Despite the somewhat negative response to the movie, it looks like Marvel Studios have plans on continuing Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange storyline sometime next year.
