Marvel Studios’ much fan-desired Nova project has finally received a small update in terms of how development is going, with a new report from The Hollywood Reporter confirming that the project has now slowed down. Bob Iger recently announced that Disney will be aiming to reduce costs and is reshaping their current strategy across their many IPs, with Marvel being their main focus going forward – which is no surprise due to how successful the MCU has become. Iger’s announcement also confirmed that Disney will be putting more focus into ensuring that even more effort, planning, and general curation goes into the making of the expensive MCU projects, whether it be a theatrical release or an exclusive for Disney Plus.
In the new report from THR, it seems that the new plans will also affect the speed of development on projects such as Nova, with the THR report stating that Nova is “now on a slower path”. However, the report from THR also seemingly confirms that Nova will be a Disney Plus show as opposed to a special or full feature-length theatrical project, as the full statement reads “And shows in development, such as Nova, are now on a slower path.”. This had already been speculated by both fans and analyzers from within the Marvel community, mostly due to the number of projects that have been adapted into a series for Disney Plus.
It seems that the Disney Plus trend over at Marvel Studios is to make half a dozen or so episodic titles that focus on more unknown characters from within the widely spread fanbase, as the majority of MCU fans aren’t as familiar with the comics as traditional comic readers. This has, so far, been a hit or miss with the general fandom of Marvel with shows such as Moon Knight being praised worldwide and others such as She-Hulk not quite receiving the same level of positivity. However, Nova has been a more highly requested adaptation from the Marvel community than others over the last few years or so, with anticipation for the project growing increasingly over time.
It may be safe to assume that another Nova update will be coming either this year or sometime in 2024, but there have been no official details to suggest a specific timeline of development as of yet.
