When Guardians Of The Galaxy was released in 2014, all of us were introduced to the Nova Corps of Xandar, which paved the way for Marvel Studios to introduce Richard Rider in the MCU ( Marvel Cinematic Universe). Even in Avengers: Endgame, there was a rumor of Nova being in the final battle, which was debunked by the Russos. With Marvel Studios expanding their projects to Disney+, this opened up a wide range of possibilities for the introduction of new characters to the MCU.
Who is Nova?
Richard Rider, a teenager from New York, was chosen at random by the alien Rhomann Dey, the last surviving Centurion of the planet Xandar’s elite Nova Corps, to inherit his power and succeed him in the rank of Nova Prime following the destruction of his world by the intergalactic pirate Zorr. Having been mortally wounded in the battle that tore Xandar apart, Dey succeeded in tracking Zorr to Earth, but he was unable to exact vengeance himself due to the extent of his injuries. At death’s door, Dey had little choice but to transfer his power to an unsuspecting human on the planet below, gambling that whoever he found would be willing to take up his cause and prove worthy of the powers he had given their recipient.
The sudden infusion of power overloaded Rider’s body, and he was hospitalized. While Rider was comatose, the moribund Rhomann Dey explained to him telepathically what had happened to him and what his mission was, and the very next day, Rider was alone in his bedroom when Dey suddenly transmitted to him Dey’s last gift to Rider, his Centurion’s uniform.
However, his origin story might be different in the MCU.
Marvel Is Developing A ‘Nova’ Project
According to Deadline, Marvel has begun development for a Nova project with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada for the screenplay, with this possibly being a Disney+ limited series.
The Cosmic Circus has also heard of this project, saying that Marvel would utilize both iterations of Nova at the same time, Richard Rider and Sam Alexander, just like Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the Insomniac Games.
By the end of the movie/series, both Novas would still be active in the MCU, with Alexander remaining on a “street-level” status on Earth and potentially interacting with other young superheroes such as Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, and America Chavez. Meanwhile, Rider would take on larger-scale threats across the cosmic corners of the MCU.
