Patrick Stewart has revealed what Sir Ian McKellen’s response was to Stewart’s cameo as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while also teasing that the two may have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During a recent interview with etonline.com (Entertainment Tonight), Stewart spoke out on how McKellen reacted to seeing his X-Men co-star reprise the role of Charles Xavier:
“Actually, it went very well. He did say something like [‘Hey, I would’ve done this!’], yes that’s true”.

This confirms that McKellen would have also been happy to reprise his role of Magneto for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if asked back when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was in development. However, there may still be a future for McKellen’s X-Men character in the MCU, as Stewart dished on possible plans for the future:
“But we’re not done, Sir Ian and myself. We’re… we [Stewart and McKellen] got plans.”

Magneto & Professor X Should Return, Here’s Why
When Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman announced that they would both be starring in Deadpool 3, with Jackman returning to the role of Wolverine which many fans had assumed would never happen again, speculation rose to new heights that Stewart’s Professor X could also join the two actors for the third Deadpool movie.
However, now that McKellen has been teased to also have a future in the MCU to reprise the role of Magneto, it becomes more clear that these two legacy Marvel actors need to be involved in the project. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, who play the younger versions of Professor X and Magneto, could also have a shot to reprise their X-Men roles for the MCU – but Stewart and McKellen should get a proper chance to say their final farewells on screen before the door is officially closed on the two actors returning for more appearances.
There has been no official announcement or confirmation that either Stewart or McKellen will be starring in any future MCU projects, but it is safe to assume that there is a possibility that fans will get to see them one more time as their beloved X-Men roles. Avengers: Secret Wars could also be a potential project for the two actors to have some sort of involvement or at least a cameo, however, Deadpool 3 being in pre-production with a 2024 release date makes for a more probable project for the two to attach themselves to for the meantime.
We won’t know anything until the cast, crew, or studio officially confirm or debunk any future appearances of Charles Xavier and Magneto for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
