Peter Jackson’s take on Middle-earth is expanding!
Warner Bros. Pictures co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Andy have officially confirmed that they have met with Peter Jackson directly to get him involved in their new The Lord of the Rings movies.
While talking to Variety, Andy and Luca confirmed that a pact to make new The Lord of the Rings movies at Warner Bros. Pictures has been made.
The two also revealed that they recently flew all the way to New Zealand to visit and talk to Peter Jackson. New Zealand is the original filming location for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, and most recently Prime Video’s The Rings of Power series. It is also home to Jackson himself.
Why Did Warner Bros. Meet With Peter Jackson?
Warner’s two CEOs explained that the reasoning behind the overseas meeting was simple. They want to reestablish both a creative and working relationship between themselves and the franchise’s original director.
It’s been expected that Warner Bros. would be trying to get Jackson on board for the new LOTR movies that were announced earlier this year.

The Hollywood Reporter also reported back in February that the overall plan is to effectively turn The Lord of the Rings into a Star Wars-like franchise with Jackson and his original LOTR writing team Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens also being in talks to get on board.
New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Movie Details
Any scripts for the new The Lord of the Rings movies are currently non-existent and they will also remain that way until the ongoing WGA writers’ strike comes to a resolution.
However, it is currently unclear as to when development on any new The Lord of the Rings movies is set to begin. It has also not been announced as to what the movies will focus on. I.e., which Middle-earth time period, etc.
With Jackson potentially back to truly helm the Grey Haven ships back to Middle-earth. The possibilities are almost endless to the extent of the Tolkien rights that Warner Bros. Pictures can work around.
Will The New ‘LOTR’ Movies Be Remakes?
It has been said that the new LOTR movies will not be remakes of Jackson’s original trilogies. So don’t expect new adaptations of Tolkien’s original novels anytime soon, thankfully.

No, these movies are set to further expand on what sounds like to be Jackson’s take on Middle-earth as seen in his The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. This is indeed an interesting notion.
Keep in mind that literally no cast or plot details have been announced as of yet. It’s possible they haven’t even been developed at all as of writing.
Who Will Be In Jackson’s New ‘LOTR’ Movies?
Similar to the previously mentioned points, no cast details have been officially announced as of yet.
Jackson’s return to the franchise could potentially see some familiar faces return to further expand on Tolkien characters’ lore.
Original cast members such as Viggo Mortensen who starred as Aragorn could return to finish the character’s story on-screen.
Orlando Bloom’s Legolas could return to do the same just as Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd’s Merry and Pippin could easily have some sort of spinoff to show what they got up to after The Lord of the Rings.
All of this and more already exists in Tolkien’s writing as the iconic storyteller established more than enough lore for such a franchise.
Jackson and Warner Bros. may even want to go deeper into Middle-earth’s past, similar to The Rings of Power. This would be a surprise due to Prime Video already telling the tale of how Mordor came to be.
It’s just too early to tell what their plans are as of the writing of this article.
