This review contains some minor spoilers for Amazon Prime Video’s Citadel.
The first two episodes of Citadel are premiering on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow April 28 and I was lucky enough to watch an advanced screening of the first three episodes, the series stars Richard Madden (Bodyguard, Eternals), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico, The Matrix Resurrections), and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada), who work for a secret spy agency known as Citadel.
‘Citadel’ Review
Anthony and Joe Russo, aka The Russo Brothers, served as producers for this new spy espionage story, stepping away from the superhero universe once again to bring an exciting, mysterious, and thrilling ride that leaves you wanting more after each episode, regardless as to how it made you feel.
Citadel‘s first episode kicks off the series in a highly thrilling and fast-paced motion, throwing the audience straight into the action while also introducing the evil organisation that goes by the name Manticore, who instantly reveals that they have brought Citadel down for good, an original take on a spy-focused story, as the main characters are instantly stripped of their power, fancy gadgets, and even their memories as they are wiped due to an intense train scene during the opening of the first episode.
Madden’s character, post losing his memories, is almost placed within the same realm as the viewer, having no clue as to what’s happening due to literally losing his entire memory, even his own name, then quickly thrown back into Citadel’s chaotic work environment after a relatively long time jump that happens fairly early on during the first two episodes of the series. Just like Eternals, Madden’s performance involves some comedic lines, however, they won’t have you laughing yourself into a frenzy, mostly due to the tone of the series’ comedic elements being more mature and sarcastic, with Madden and Tucci both sharing some brilliant scenes together.
One thing’s for sure, Chopra came to kick some serious a** in this show, having by far the best action and fighting scenes throughout the first two episodes, with an incredible performance between Chopra’s Nadia Sinh and a creepy kidnapper that, let’s just say, gets his a** handed to him on a plate despite Chopra’s character already being extremely injured, probably the best dramatic action scene of the year so far, hand down, which readers of this review will instantly be aware of when watching.
