MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 11, EPISODE 24 OF THE WALKING DEAD INSIDE
Yes, Rick Grimes and Michonne have returned, well for the final episode of the Walking Dead’s final season anyway. However, due to reports online from the past year or two, fans are wondering when Andrew Lincoln managed to film this scene.
Luckily, Greg Nicotero has cleared everything up with Entertainment Weekly post the show’s live finale event. Although his details don’t quite match up with reports from earlier this year, some details actually do, so let’s dive in and break it down.
Rick and Michonne’s Return Shot In August 2022
Greg Nicotero confirmed with EW.com that Andrew Lincoln filmed his episode 24 scene in August of 2022, months after the wrap-up of the final season’s filming.
Now, this contradicts inside scoops that reported Andrew Lincoln was filming VFX test footage earlier than August. CoveredGeekly, we, received intel that Andrew Lincoln had filmed some sort of firefight VFX footage, where he wore rigged clothing to simulate being shot or somewhere along those lines.
So why wasn’t this the case in the final episode? Greg Nicotero has offered some details that could explain why the final scene could have been changed last minute.
Rick and Michonne’s Return Planned For Two Years
Greg Nicotero confirmed with EW.com that the planning for this return took over a “year-and-a-half ago”, and had this to say when discussing the lengthy process of figuring out the details.
“So we went back and forth for a long time about whether it was going to happen, whether it wasn’t going to happen, whether Danai was going to be available. We went back and forth on it a lot.”

So it is highly possible that Andrew Lincoln did indeed head over to the studios to test some ideas out with the crew, extremely possible.
