A seventh Scream movie is officially in the pipeline, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter. This time, the sequel will be helmed by Christopher Landon, known for his work on films like Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Freaky (2020), and Happy Death Day (2017).
Landon shared the news on Twitter (newly rebranded as X), “Looks like 7 really is a lucky number. More to come…” with an image of Ghostface from Scream VI.
Landon is taking the reins from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the team known as Radio Silence who rebooted the Slasher franchise following the demise of Wes Craven in 2015.
Scream Franchise Moving Up, Box Office, Details
The franchise started with the 1996 movie Scream, directed by the legendary Wes Craven and starring Neve Campbell as Sidney, the target of the Ghostface killer. The iconic look of the Ghostface killer was inspired by Edvard Munch’s famous painting, “The Scream.”
Earlier this year, Scream 6, aka Scream VI, starring Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Beetlejuice 2) turned out to be a financial and critical success, earning a solid 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and $168.8 million at the box office.
Following this success, fans were anticipating the return of the Radio Silence crew for the seventh installment. However, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett stepped away from the project to focus on an original horror movie for Universal Studios.
The duo, as well as third group member Chad Villella, will remain as executive producers. Spyglass Media Group will be producing the film. Paramount is also expected to once again serve as the primary distributor.
SAG-AFTRA & WGA Strike: ‘Scream 7’
Due to an ongoing actors’ strike, the cast for Scream 7 remains uncertain. However, it is expected that the main four stars, including Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding, will reprise their roles, given their characters survived the Ghostface.
It’s also highly likely that Courteney Cox will be back as Gale Weathers as the Friends star has featured in every Scream film in the franchise, and she survived the events of the sixth movie.
As of now, no writer is attached to the project owing to the writers’ strike. The previous two films were written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. However, Landon is also an established screenwriter; he has written or co-written all of his directorial works.
Scream 7 has not yet got a scheduled release date.
