The director of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, David F. Sandberg, recently announced via Twitter that Zachary Levi‘s future at DC Studios as Shazam may depend on how many people go see the sequel in theatres. James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently reshaping things over at Warner Bros. Pictures in regard to their DC properties, with new plans for the future of DC movies, tv shows, and even games. Fans have been waiting for an official confirmation as to if Levi’s Shazam will be staying or going due to a large number of projects and actors being axed or cancelled at the studio.
However, Sandberg has provided an almost positive update for Shazam fans, as he wrote on Twitter “the possibility for more Shazam is there and if that’s what you want your best bet is to go see the film” in response to a fan asking “Just give us an answer, whether #Shazam will have a role in future #DCU”. Sandberg also confirmed that Shazam “definitely won’t if people don’t go see the movie”, which simply states that there may be no future for the character if the sequel doesn’t perform well at the box office.
Update From DC Studios On Shazam’s Future
Shazam! Fury of the God director David F. Sandberg also confirmed that he has received word from DC Studios about how Shazam may possibly fit into the future plan, as he told a fan on Twitter: “What I’ve been told is that there’s nothing in the Shazam films that contradict the future plans for DC”. This partially confirms that there will be no desire to cut Zachary Levi’s Shazam out of Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC Universe of movies at DC Studios, as long as the numbers stay up that is, however, no official announcement of this has been made as of yet.
If the Shazam franchise does end up getting cancelled amidst the new plans, it won’t just be Levi who says goodbye, it will also be the impressive number of reoccurring cast members such as Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Djimon Hounsou, Cooper Andrews and the various other cast members coming from both Shazam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods releases in theatres on March 17th, 2023.
