It has been six years since the release of the fourth season of Steven Moffat’s Sherlock series, which means six years of fans demanding more.
Since then, Moffat has worked on projects such as Dracula and recently Inside Man, in which he revealed discussions for a season two have been had during an interview with Deadline.
However, during the same interview, Moffat also provided a status update on whether or not we can ever expect to see a future instalment of his Sherlock series.
The original series starred Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as his famous right-hand man, John Watson.
Sherlock Season 5 Discussion
Despite the many years passed since the last chapter of the iconic Sherlock series, Moffat has confirmed that he would “start writing Sherlock tomorrow” if Cumberbatch and Freeman were to also return.
While speaking to Deadline, he joked by saying that the two stars are on to “bigger and better things”, adding “please come back?”.
“They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, ‘please come back?’”

So, there you have it, Moffat has basically confirmed that he would be more than happy to work on another season for the crime-solving genius known as Sherlock.
Now, we just need Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman to share the same interest, and we might just see new episodes in the near future.
Although Moriarty is no longer a threat in Moffat’s Sherlock universe, he proved in the fourth season that he doesn’t need the famous villain to carry the show.
There are still plenty of potential storylines that can still be utilized in the Moffat/Cumberbatch adaptation, with plenty of cases for the detective to solve.
You can stream Inside Man on BBC iPlayer, starring David Tennant & Stanley Tucci.
