Sydney Sweeney is set to make her mark in the realm of Superhero films, following her acclaimed performances in Emmy-nominated series like Euphoria and The White Lotus.
Speaking with Variety, Sweeney confirmed she’s playing Julia Carpenter aka Spider-Woman in Sony’s Madame Web, which stars Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) in the titular role.

In addition to confirming her role, Sweeney mentioned that she promptly visited a comic store soon after becoming a part of Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web project: “I was freaking out, of course, I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”
Will Sweeney’s Spider-Woman Join The MCU?
As of now, it remains unclear whether her character will embrace the Spider-Woman persona in Madam Web. However, when questioned if she would like to see her character join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she playfully responded with an enigmatic affirmative “yes”, carefully avoiding revealing any details.
Sweeney also expressed her optimism about the success of Madame Web upon its release, describing it as a departure from the conventional superhero movie, offering something unique and unexpected.
Who Is Marvel’s Julia Carpenter?
Julia Carpenter was the second person to take up the mantle of Spider-Woman in the comics after Jessica Drew.
Julia Carpenter becomes Spider-Woman after being injected with a mix of spider venom and exotic plant extracts during an experiment. Her presence in the comic realm has been significant, including her involvement in the inaugural Secret Wars event and a stint as an Avenger.
Kraven & Madame Web Connection
Notably, Carpenter shares a connection with the Kravinoff family. She became the target of a ritualistic sacrifice intended to resurrect Kraven the Hunter. This ordeal led her to assume the role of the new Madame Web, taking over from the original who had been mortally wounded by the Kravinoffs. As the new Madame Web, she gained telepathic, precognitive, and astral projection powers, accompanied by a unique challenge—blindness.
The Madame Web film has some exciting potential to explore the dynamic between Julia Carpenter and the original Madame Web – their mentorship and connection to the Spider-Verse could add a fascinating layer to the story.

Given Madame Web’s debut in Secret Wars, it raises an interesting question: could there be a chance for her to make an appearance in the upcoming MCU Avengers: Secret Wars movie? Of course, that might involve some behind-the-scenes collaboration between Sony and Marvel at this stage.
Madame Web Has Multiple Spider-Women
Sydney Sweeney will be part of an impressive ensemble of talented actresses, many of whom will portray different iterations of Spider-Woman from the comics.
