The 2023 ‘The Flash’ movie from the Warner Brothers’ DC Universe is going to be featuring multiple Flash variants, similar to the comics and the CW live-action series. It has already been confirmed that the plot of ‘The Flash’ will be centred around Barry Allen traversing through the multiverse, in a similar style to the Flashpoint comic storyline. One variant, in particular, has just been revealed in further detail via new merchandise art found being shared online. We still have a while to wait for the film’s official release, as it is currently set to drop in theatres this June, so promotional art is all we have for the meantime.
During the teaser of the film, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen is seen trying to go back into the past to save his mother from her famously known fate from various adaptations. However, despite the teaser revealing so little, it is clear from what we do see that he ends up causing a multiverse of problems. Sadly, with no surprise, details from the film are being kept very tightly sealed just as any comic book movie aims for nowadays. We don’t yet know who the main antagonist of the film is going to be, or even how many DC characters and variants will be showing up.
What we know though, thankfully now due to the new merchandise art being revealed, is that the Dark Flash will be making an appearance.

Who Is The Dark Flash? What’s His Origin?
Since the announcement of the 2023 Flash movie, there have been a couple of murmurings and rumours about the Dark Flash having a part to play in the film. The new merchandise, however, gives us our real first look and reveals the official design and involvement of the character. The Dark Flash, or Black Flash as he has also been known in the past, has several adaptations throughout the DC universe. In the CW ‘The Flash‘ series, he is known as the Black Flash/ Zoom or as Hunter Zolomon, and he appeared in multiple episodes throughout the show.
You can also find the Black Flash in various comics from DC where he is more commonly known as a grim-reaper type character, but only reaping those with superspeed abilities such as Barry Allen’s. Some fans even theorised that he was brought in to stop the speedsters due to the normal grim-reaper simply being too slow to catch them. Although he may come across as a villain in the comics, he is more of a neutral character if you consider the lore of the grim-reaper, otherwise known as Death. The Black Flash is just doing his job really, which is to bring these speedy variants back to the speed force, which is the original power source of The Flash.

Which Dark Flash Origin Is The Film Using?
It’s just too early to tell which origin of the Dark Flash/ Black Flash the studio has decided to go with, as we have seen very little of this character so far. It’s safe to assume that the Dark Flash will have something to do with the multiverse, just like he does in the majority of his adaptations. We just don’t know why yet, could he be serving as a grim reaper to stop Barry Allen and other Flash variants from messing with the speed force? In the comics, the Dark Flash ended up being revealed to be Bart Allen who is also famously known for being another version of The Flash.
Since the plot details are being kept very secretive for the time being, we could also assume that they might be taking the character into a completely new and original storyline. Speculation and theorising are all that can be done for now, at least until we have a better look at these characters through the form of a trailer or by watching the film itself. Michael Keaton will be returning as Batman along with Sasha Calle’s involvement as Supergirl, with many more characters being a part of the multiverse-driven DC movie ‘The Flash’.
The Flash is currently set to release in theatres on the 16th of June, 2023.
