The publishing company HarperCollins has announced, via IGN, a brand new illustrated edition of Tolkien’s classic novel The Hobbit is set to hit the shelves on September 19, 2023.
This new version of The Hobbit book will feature 50 paintings, maps, and original drawings made by none other than the legendary storyteller J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit was originally released back in 1937, 85 years prior to the writing of this article, and it still holds up to this very day, being one of the most beloved fantasy worlds of all time.
‘The Hobbit Illustrated Edition’ Details
HarperCollins’ new edition will be released as a hardcover this September 19, with the book currently being available to pre-order on Amazon, IndieBound, Barnes and Noble, and also at Target.
This new edition comes after the illustrated edition of The Lord of the Rings, which was only released back in 2021, and with the illustrated edition of The Silmarillion which arrived in the fall of 2022.

The Hobbit Illustrated Edition will be featuring a forward by Tolkien himself, with notes included from Tolkien scholars Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull.
It’s safe to say that Tolkien’s world will always remain within the millions of fans’ hearts worldwide, ranging from the original novels to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, and most recently Prime Videos’ The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power streaming series.
